With its neat and compact nature, Clematis 'Guiding Promise' is a delightful choice for larger patio containers or meandering through mixed borders and small shrubs or roses, maintaining a perfect size without overpowering. Its deep mauve-purple blooms, delicately adorned with gently crimped edges, harmonise beautifully with showy white hydrangeas or pink roses.

Named for, and celebrating the Girl Guides in the UK, this cultivar offers a second flush that extends the display right through to autumn. Ideal for novice gardeners, this clematis is hassle-free and easy to manage, making it a superb addition to any garden space.

This clematis is suitable for containers when planted in a large (minimum 50 x 50cm or 20 x 20in), well-insulated and non-metallic pot, helping keep roots cool and reducing the risk of heat stress and wilt. Position pots where they will have some shade from the midday sun.

Please note that the pot in the photograph is not supplied with the plant (which is sent out in a simple nursery alternative), but we have a wide and wonderful range on our website to choose from.

How to care for Clematis Guiding Promise ('Evipo053') (PBR) (Boulevard Series):

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Choose a spot with well-drained, fertile soil and ensure the location receives plenty of sunlight—at least 6 hours a day—for optimal flowering.

However, they prefer their roots to be cool and shaded, so plant low-growing plants or add a layer of mulch of well-rotted compost around the base, avoiding the immediate crown.

In early spring cut back the previous year's stems to a pair of strong buds about 15-20cm (6-8in) above ground level and apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser.
