A curious plant with an ornamental pineapple growing from the top, but this pineapple is not for eating! Part of the Bromeliad plant family native to tropical America, Ananas comosus Corona has swordlike spiny green leaves, held in a dense rosette, with the fruit held in the centre on a sturdy stalk. It’s a real sun lover, so pop it on a sunny kitchen windowsill to be appreciated.

It usually flowers once mature, typically 2-3 years old, and this can happen at any time of year if it has enough warmth and light, though it’s more likely in spring or summer when conditions are brightest.

Please note that the plant comes in a 12cm nursery pot as standard, unless a decorative pot cover is included as an option.

How to care for Ananas comosus Corona ('Duranas2') (PBR):

Place it in a sunny spot (a south or west-facing windowsill is ideal) and use a light, gritty compost, when potting up, so excess water drains away easily; water when the top few centimetres of compost have dried out, keeping it slightly moist but never soggy. Add a little rainwater into the central rosette during the growing season.

It enjoys warmth and a bit of humidity, so keep it away from cold draughts and don’t let temperatures drop much below 15°C (59°F). Feed lightly with a liquid houseplant fertiliser every few weeks in spring and summer to support growth. After flowering and fruiting, the main plant will slowly decline, but it produces offsets (pups) at the base; these can be removed and potted up to grow new plants.
