Brilliant autumn colour makes this upright deciduous tree a popular choice for seasonal impact. Its foliage is three-lobed and glossy, emerging mid to dark green in spring with a subtle blue-green tinge, then turning fiery crimson and orange as the season cools. Leaves hold well into late autumn, extending the display compared to other maples.
In early spring, before the leaves emerge, clusters of small crimson flowers appear along the bare branches, adding subtle interest. These may be followed by winged green fruits (samaras) later in the season. It forms a strong, rounded crown, making it ideal as a feature tree in gardens or larger landscapes.
Acer rubrum 'October Glory' performs well on most soils, including chalk, and thrives in full sun or light shade. It's a reliable choice for autum foliage, offering long-lasting colour and a tidy, uniform shape. This cultivar of red maple is especially valued for its consistent performance and adaptability across different UK growing conditions.
How to care for Acer rubrum October Glory:
Plant in a sheltered spot, away from cold winds. Dig in a hole twice the size the root ball, add well-rotted organic matter and stake when young. Do not allow to dry out while it is getting established.
Protect young trees from winter frost with a 10cm (4in) mulch of organic matter, taking care to leave space around the trunk of the tree.
No routine pruning is required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when they are fully dormant. Avoid pruning at any other time of the year as acers tend to 'bleed' sap if cut while they are actively growing.
