An excellent ornamental tree for year-round interest, this crab apple offers masses of white, star-shaped flowers that emerge from pink buds in late spring. These are followed by striking crimson to orange-red fruits that persist well into winter, providing seasonal colour and a valuable food source for birds.

Malus × atrosanguinea 'Gorgeous' forms a compact, rounded crown with dark green foliage that turns shades of yellow and bronze in autumn. It’s a reliable choice for smaller gardens, where its decorative value and practical use for crab apple jelly are equally appreciated.

This cultivar is easy to grow, copes well in most soil types, and is perfect for wildlife-friendly planting schemes.

How to care for Malus × atrosanguinea Gorgeous:

When planting your flowering crab, prepare a hole up to three times the diameter of its root system. Fork over the base of the pit in readiness, incorporating plenty of organic matter into the backfill and planting hole. Avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil, trees should be planted out as they arrive.

If you've ordered a bare root tree, soak the roots in a bucket of water for half an hour prior to planting, or if this is not possible, they can be heeled in temporarily, covering their roots with soil, or potted up. Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom.

Remove dead, diseased and crossing branches while the tree is dormant during the winter months.
