Slender, tightly wrapped, cigar-like buds casually discard their flaky, papery sheaths to reveal emerging tender, silken leaves, which initially unfurl a pinkish purple before slowly starting to age and darken. Soft, hair like protrusions line the outermost edges of the leaves, and in time the tree is smothered in gorgeous plum-toned foliage. Majestic!
Please note: This is sent out as a bare root plant, and it should be planted out as soon as possible.
How to care for Fagus sylvatica Atropurpurea Group:
Bareroot plants should be planted out as soon as possible, incorporating some well-rotted garden compost or horse manure into the planting hole. Firm the soil around the roots and stake firmly. Water in well and continue to water frequently during the following growing season.
After flowering in late spring or early summer, lightly cut back any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant and apply a generous 5–7cm (2–3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
