'Chicago Fire' is an unusual American cultivar with narrowly oval, dark green leaves in early and mid-season, turning vivid shades of fiery red before leaf fall in autumn. A hardy and robust form, often ‘firing up’ earlier than the species (Euonymu alatus), its pink, four-lobed fruit, which split to reveal orange seeds in autumn provide further interest, while the corky 'wings' on the stems create out-of-season interest.

How to care for Euonymus alatus Timber Creek:

When planting, dig a generous hole and mix some well-rotted compost or manure into the soil to enrich it before backfilling. Also incorporate mycorrhizal fungi to boost establishment. After planting, apply 5-7cm (2-3in) of organic mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Lightly prune back the tips of young branches in mid to late spring to promote bushy, compact growth. To maintain shape and rejuvenate, prune annually while dormant before spring growth begins. Thin out old stems and any crossing or misdirected branches to open up the interior.
