A new variety of the Angel's fishing rod, this elegant perennial has arching stems of bell-shaped, lilac-blue flowers that resemble pendent bluebells in summer. The flowers hang above clumps of grass-like, mid to grey-green leaves, that are retained all year. The stems look like delicate wands, but are actually very tough and appear to tremble in the breeze. Angel's fishing rod is perfect for introducing movement to a well-drained border in a sunny, sheltered site, or for overhanging water.
More vigorous than the common magenta-coloured variety. 'Blue Belle' also produces graceful seedheads that complement autumn-flowering ornamental grasses.
Dierama or more commonly known as 'Angel's fishing rod' are native of South Africa but have been grown in gardens in the UK and Ireland for over 100 years and many varieties were made famous by an old Irish nursery of great repute called Slieve Donard from where many older hybrids eminated.
How to care for Dierama Blue Belle ('Rowblu') (PBR):
Consider location carefully to ensure your Dierama has warmth and free-draining soil, avoiding cold, shady or poorly-drained/soggy conditions. For heavy clay or light sandy soil, dig in plenty of well-rotted organic matter before planting.
Water freely during the growing season, but protect against excessive wet winter weather. Remove old foliage in early spring and and once established, divide congested clumps at the same time.
