Turn up the heat with this tangy blend of pak choi, mizuna and perilla, chosen specially to give you a colourful mix of baby leaves to pep up your salads. It's a great choice for winter growing, as each variety is bone hardy and grows best in cooler weather: put your empty greenhouse to good use or grow under cloches.

How to care for mixed oriental spicy leaves:

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during warm spells, and protect seedlings from slugs and flea beetles. There’s no need to thin seedlings for baby leaves — instead, harvest by picking individual leaves or snipping a row back to around 2cm (1in) above the soil to encourage regrowth. You can usually expect four or five cuts per sowing.

Regular watering and harvesting will keep plants tender and productive for several months.

Sowing instructions:

Choose a spot in light shade with moist, well-prepared soil. Sow in shallow drills or broadcast thinly across a wider area, then lightly rake in. Late sowings can be made directly into greenhouse borders or containers, or under cloches outdoors for extra protection.

For Perilla, start seeds indoors in spring as they need warmth to germinate, then transplant outside once frosts have passed.
