Spiraea japonica 'Genpei' is sought after for its charming clusters of dark pink and white flowers in mid and late summer and small, sharply toothed, dark green leaves.

A deciduous shrub, it has an unusual flowering habit, and produces a mixture of pink and white flowers on the same and different flower heads.

Ideal for a sunny, well-drained border, it can also be used to create low, informal hedging.

How to care for Spiraea japonica Genpei:

Plant Spiraea japonica cultivars in a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained, moderately fertile soil, spacing plants 60-90cm (2-3ft) apart. Water regularly while establishing and mulch around the base to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect roots. Feed lightly in early spring to encourage strong growth, vibrant foliage, and abundant flowering.

Prune in early spring before new growth starts to shape the plant and encourage colourful summer foliage and flowers on new wood. For rejuvenation, cut back by about one-third, or harder to 10-15cm (4-6in), removing any old or dead branches. After flowering, deadhead spent blooms in summer to keep the plant tidy and potentially encourage a second flush of flowers.
