Skimmia japonica 'Redruth' (female)

Skimmia 'Redruth' (female)

Product Image
This dense, dome-shaped evergreen shrub cultivar is distinguished by its larger, deep-green leathery leaves and berries compared to the species. It produces small, fragrant white flowers (6mm or ¼in) from red buds, forming panicles up to 8cm (3in) long, followed by red fruit.

Skimmia japonica 'Redruth' is a female clone, so will require a male skimmia nearby for reliable berry production.

How to care for Skimmia japonica 'Redruth':

When planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter to improve moisture retention, soil fertility and drainage. Skimmia prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, so avoid chalky conditions unless supplemented with ericaceous compost. Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells.

Minimal pruning is required, but you can lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Mulching in spring with compost or leaf mould will help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Protect from harsh winter winds to prevent leaf scorch, especially in colder regions.
