Skimmia japonica Cleopatra ('Snep24') (PBR)

Japanese skimmia (female) (berry-bearing)

Product Image
Brighten up your shady spots with a compact, evergreen shrub that delivers colour when most other plants are resting or preparing for spring. Skimmia japonica ‘Cleopatra’ is a female cultivated variety prized for its glossy, deep green leaves and striking clusters of long-lasting red berries, which appear from autumn into winter and provide a cheerful focal point for borders or containers.

In spring, it produces small, fragrant ivory flowers, subtle yet charming, that set the scene for the berry display later in the year. To enjoy a bumper crop berries, plant a male skimmia nearby, such as ‘Rubella’, to ensure pollination.

This shrub thrives in light to full shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, tolerating a range of pH levels while performing best in acidic to neutral conditions. Its compact size makes it ideal for courtyards, shaded corners, or even as part of a mixed container planting.

Please note that our plants come in nursery pots as standard, unless a decorative pot cover is included as an option.

How to care for Skimmia japonica Cleopatra ('Snep24') (PBR):

When planting, enrich the soil with plenty of well-rotted organic matter to improve moisture retention, soil fertility and drainage. Skimmia prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, so avoid chalky conditions unless supplemented with ericaceous compost. Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially in dry spells.

Minimal pruning is required, but you can lightly trim after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Mulching in spring with compost or leaf mould will help retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Protect from harsh winter winds to prevent leaf scorch, especially in colder regions.
