Sesleria nitida

shining moor-grass

Product Image
Fine blue-grey foliage and airy flower stems give this ornamental grass a light, natural look that works beautifully in gravel gardens, prairie-style planting and sunny borders. Forming neat evergreen clumps, it adds structure throughout the year without becoming bulky or untidy, making it an easy choice for modern planting schemes as well as softer, wildlife-friendly gardens.

Sesleria nitida produces slender stems topped with soft, creamy-white flower spikes from early summer, creating gentle movement above the foliage. The narrow leaves have a cool grey-blue tone with darker undersides, helping to contrast nicely with flowering perennials and silver-leaved plants.

This compact, ornamental grass is particularly useful for edging paths, weaving through drought-tolerant planting or softening hard landscaping. It thrives in well-drained soil and copes well with sunny, exposed spots once established.

How to care for Sesleria nitida:

Plant in well-drained soil, ideally in full sun or partial shade, where it will thrive in a range of soil types, including poor or dry soils.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help plants establish, but once mature, it becomes more drought-tolerant.

Remove spent flower stems after blooming to keep the plant tidy and encourage fresh growth. In early spring, cut back old foliage to refresh the clump and maintain its neat, upright habit.

Avoid planting in heavy, poorly drained soil, as excessively wet, winter ground conditions can lead to root rot.
