Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. spectabilis

showy yellow-groove bamboo

Product Image
A robust, evergreen bamboo with upright, brownish-green canes, striped with yellow bands, along with pink and cream striped sheaths, create a stunning display. The glossy light green leaves and streaked culms (stems) add elegance, developing a magenta tint. Known for adaptability to various soil conditions, Phyllostachys aureosulcata stands out with very upright growth, occasionally flaunting striking zigzagged lower internodes. Best planted en masse in its own dedicated area to avoid competing with other plants.

How to care for Phyllostachys aureosulcata f. spectabilis:

When planting Phyllostachys, space plants around 3m (9ft) apart to allow for their spreading habit. Choose a site with moist but well-drained soil, ideally in full sun or partial shade. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, to help establish strong root systems.

Apply a generous mulch of organic matter in spring to retain moisture and insulate roots in the winter, and keep them cool in the summer. Feed with a high-nitrogen fertiliser in early spring and again in mid-summer to support vigorous growth.

To maintain a tidy appearance, remove any dead or weak canes in late winter or early spring, and thin out dense clumps to improve air circulation.

Consider installing a root barrier when planting to prevent unwanted spread, or grow in large containers for a more controlled display.
