A real head-turner for sunny borders and pots, this compact perennial brings an unexpected twist to a familiar favourite. Upright stems carry bright pink, orchid-like flowers delicately speckled with deeper tones, creating a refined look that stands apart from the usual nepeta palette. Flowering starts in early summer and continues well into autumn, delivering months of reliable colour.
The plant forms a neat, sturdy clump with dark green foliage that stays fresh and healthy throughout the season, showing good resistance to disease. Its compact habit makes it easy to slot into mixed planting schemes without swamping neighbouring plants.
Nepeta ‘Serene Wild Orchid’ thrives in free-draining soil, copes well with drier conditions once established, and performs just as well in containers as it does in the ground. Bees, bumblebees and butterflies flock to the flowers, making this an easy, low-maintenance choice that quietly boosts biodiversity while keeping the garden looking colourful.
How to care for Nepeta Serene Wild Orchid:
Nepeta thrives in sunny, well-drained locations with slightly alkaline soil and should be planted with plenty of well-rotted organic matter into the backfill and immediate area. To encourage a second flush of blooms, prune it by one-third after the first flowering and cut back heavily in late winter to maintain its shape.
Regular deadheading will promote continuous flowering, and once established, water deeply but infrequently, to assist in developing drought-tolerance. Apply a light mulch around the base annually and avoid over-fertilising to prevent floppy growth. Divide the plant every 3-4 years to maintain its vigour.
Good air circulation is important to prevent fungal (mildew) issues so space plants accordingly - we recommend a spacing of 30cm (12in) between 9cm plants, and 45cm (18in) between 2 litre plants.
Soil:
Moderately fertile, moist, but well-drained soil, or general-purpose loam-based potting compost
