switch ivy

Product Image
The foliage of this little evergreen shrub are curled and variously puckered, which gives it year-round textural interest, while their colouring also changes throughout the seasons. Initially emerging with a bright pinkish red flush before maturing to a rich, lustrous green, but then, as the temperatures dip for winter, the foliage of Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red' develops a burgundy tint, which is often present until the temperates start to creep up again in spring.

How to care for Leucothoe axillaris Curly Red (PBR):

Plant in moist, acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, ideally in partial shade or dappled sunlight. Avoid hot, dry, or exposed sites, as foliage can scorch or dry out. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the plant establishes, and mulch annually with leaf mould or composted bark to help retain moisture and maintain soil acidity.

Minimal pruning is required. In late spring, remove any dead, damaged, or misplaced stems to keep the plant tidy and encourage healthy new growth. Lightly trim after flowering if needed to maintain shape. Feed with an ericaceous fertiliser in spring to promote strong growth and vibrant foliage colour.
