This tough and easy to grow perennial looks great when allowed to naturalise throughout mixed borders, but as it loves a touch of moisture, Leucojum aestivum also does well when planted in drifts around the upper edges of a pond.

The bell-shaped flowers appear in spring, held in small clusters at the tips of the upright stems - and they look a little like giant-sized snowdrops. Get close to them though and you may detect a delicate chocolate-like perfume.

How to care for Leucojum aestivum:

Plant summer snowflake bulbs in autumn about 10cm (4in) deep and 8-10cm (3-4in) apart in moist, well-drained soil, ideally in full sun or partial shade. They prefer soil that stays cool and damp, making them ideal for borders, woodland edges, or near water.

Water well after planting and keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells in spring. Allow the foliage to die back completely after flowering to feed the bulbs for next year’s growth, and avoid cutting back too early.

Once clumps become congested, lift and divide them in late summer or early autumn.
