leek 'Bleu de Solaise'

leek ( syn. Blue Solaise) or Allium porrum 'Blue de Solaise'

Product Image
An absolutely gorgeous heirloom French cultivated variety with a fantastic flavour and steely blue leaves that make a beautiful addition to the ornamental border – they're particularly beautiful dusted with frost. Leek 'Bleu de Solaise' is one of the hardiest leeks around, so you can leave it in the ground right through winter until you're ready to harvest its sturdy white shanks.

How to care for leek Bleu de Solaise:

Grow leeks in firm, fertile soil in full sun. Water in well and keep weed-free. Feed with a high-nitrogen fertiliser during the growing season. Harvest from autumn onwards when stems are thick enough to use, lifting with a fork to avoid damage.

Sowing instructions:

Sow direct into shallow drills in a well-prepared seedbed in spring, and thin seedlings to 1cm apart. When seedlings are about pencil thickness, transplant to their final growing place, leaving 15cm (6in) between plants.

For the longest white stems, dib a hole for each plant 15cm (6in) deep and drop the seedling in before filling the hole with water. To make the white shanks as long as possible, heap soil up around the stems of the plants as they grow.
