Throughout the summer this magnificent perennial produces brown-eyed, yellow daisies on tall stems, which tower over the border. An impressive plant - not just for its stature, but also for its ease of growth and sunny disposition, it will quickly fill gaps towards the back of the border, provided it has deep fertile soil and a reliable source of water.
How to care for Inula helenium:
Plant Inula in well-drained soil enriched with compost or manure, choosing a sunny or lightly shaded spot. Allow plenty of room – each plant can spread to about 1m (3ft) across and 2m (6.5 ft) tall. Water regularly in dry spells during the first season, and mulch in spring to retain moisture. In more exposed positions, use brushwood or bamboo canes to provide support.
Cut stems back to the base in late autumn or winter after flowering, and lift and divide clumps every few years to rejuvenate and control size.
