What's included:
In this selection you will receive 6 individual seed packets (each containing approx 20 seeds) within a sturdy, illustrated cardboard gift box. Typically, the collection will contain one each of the following listed varieties, however the contents of the gift box may be subject to change (to other heritage varieties) if any are unavailable at the time of despatch.
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Painted Lady': Intensely fragrant, deep pink and white, wavy-edged flowers appear in profusion from June to September. These beautiful, bi-coloured sweet peas are an old heritage variety from the 18th century and are still incredibly popular today. They're ideal for training over a wigwam of bamboo canes in a sunny spot. Grows to 1.8m.
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Cupani': The flowers may be a little smaller than their recently introduced cousins, but this old variety from 1699 has a brilliant two-tone colour and the scent is to die for. You simply wont find a sweet pea with a better scent than this one. Grows to 1.8m.
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Henry Eckford': A stunning heirloom variety introduced in 1906 by Henry Eckford, the ’father’ of the sweet pea. Spectacular bright orange-pink flowers are freely produced on moderate stems. Best grown in part shade to prevent flower scorch in hot weather, they still remain, nonethless, a worthy, scented sweet pea with an unusual colour. Grows to 1.5m.
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Lord Nelson': A popular, 'Navy'-blue best-seller since the 1890s, this remarkable sweet pea is richly scented and luxuriantly dark blue to purple. A grandiflora type, it bears 3 to 4 blooms on shorter stems that can still be used in cut-flower vases as well as wigwams, canes or ships rigging (if you prefer!) Grows to 1.8m.
- Lathyrus odoratus 'Lady Grisel Hamilton': Blue-lavender flowers crowd this elegant, hooded sweet pea, bearing 3-4 flowers on each stem. The scent is strongly perfumed, as with most grandifloras, and make excellent subjects for a vase. Grows to 2.4m.
- Lathyrus odoratus 'America': A richly perfumed, heritage variety with raspberry ripple swirls on white petals. Bearing 3-4 flowers per stem, this grandiflora type sweet pea bred at the turn of the last century will quickly cover trellis and obelisks, adding colour and a powerful fragrance to summer flower borders. Grows to 1.8m.
