Helianthus salicifolius
willow-leaved sunflower
This perennial dies back to below ground level each year in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.
- Position: full sun
- Soil: moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil
- Rate of growth: fast-growing
- Flowering period: August to September
- Hardiness: fully hardy
With large sprays of brown-centred yellow daisies 5-7cm wide opening in late summer, the willow-leaved sunflower is grown largely for its tall, feathery foliage. Equally popular as a cut flower as well as the back of a suitably large border, slugs and snails love the narrow, arching leaves, too, so you will need to protect against them. - Garden care: Cut back old stems after flowering and top dress each year with a generous layer of well-rotted manure. Divide clumps every 3-4 years to maintain vigour.
