A showy plant with a very big name, Erica arborea var. alpina f. aureifolia 'Albert's Gold' is primarily grown for its fine yellow foliage, which turns yellowish green as it matures. An upright evergreen shrub, this tree heather can be used to create an eye-catching addition towards the back of the border - and it could also be used for informal hedging. Occasionally tiny white flowers, which have a honey-like perfume, may also form in clusters, which can grow up to 30cm long.
How to care for Erica arborea var. alpina f. aureifolia Albert's Gold:
Plant Erica in a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-drained soil, using a blend of ericaceous compost and well-rotted compost, and optionally add ericoid mycorrhizal fungi to the planting hole. Mulch lightly with ericaceous material to keep roots cool and moist.
During the growing season, water regularly and apply a half-strength balanced liquid fertiliser every four weeks. After flowering, trim the tips with shears or secateurs to remove dead flowers and encourage bushy growth, but avoid cutting into old wood as it may not resprout. Protect young plants from frost and only water in winter if the soil is dry.
