Cornus alba Baton Rouge ('Minbat') (PBR)

Red-barked Dogwood

Product Image
Bright red stems make this deciduous shrub a standout feature, particularly in winter when its colour intensifies. In spring and summer, clusters of small cream flowers emerge among dark green leaves, followed by ornamental blue-white berries in autumn. The foliage turns rich shades of plum before falling, revealing the striking winter stems.

Cornus alba 'Baton Rouge' thrives in full sun, and is arguably the best cultivar for red stem colour, working well in mixed borders, waterside plantings, or massed for impact. Adaptable and hardy, it grows in most soils, including acid and damp conditions, making it a low-maintenance choice, once establiahed.

How to care for Cornus alba Baton Rouge ('Minbat') (PBR):

Incorporate some well-rotted garden compost when planting and scatter some mycorrhizal fungi on the rootball to aid establishment and water in well.

Once established, for best stem colour, cut new growth back hard to within 5-7cm (2-3in) from the ground in March and apply a generous mulch of well-rotted garden compost or horse manure around the base of the plant.
