Chinese trumpet vine (syn. Campsis × tagliabuana Madame Galen)
Spectacular, trumpet-shaped, salmon red flowers appear from August to September among dark green leaves. Campsis × tagliabuana 'Madame Galen' is a vigorous climber that looks great trained over a sunny wall or fence and needs lots of space to spread out.
How to care for Campsis × tagliabueana Madame Galen:
To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.
Plant Campsis in a sunny, sheltered spot, ideally against a south or west-facing wall for warmth and protection from hard frosts. Provide strong support, such as a trellis or wall, as this vigorous climber can grow large.
Use well-draining, moderately fertile soil, and water regularly during the first growing season; once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage flowering. In colder areas, protect young plants from frost until they’re well-established.
