Deeply cut foliage foliage forms a loose mound, which in spring is crowned with petal-packed flowers, each with a distinctive blue eye. An easy to grow shade-lover, it's perfect for borders, pots or woodland settings where it will kick the growing season off with a splash of colour.

Plant rhizomes horizontally 5–8cm (2–3in) deep in September or October, ideally in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Choose a spot in partial or light shade, such as under deciduous trees, where they can form naturalistic drifts.
