These pots were inspired by a visit to an orchid collector. She had planted up lots of hand thrown terracotta pots of all shapes and sizes with holes in them to let air circulate around the plants’ roots.
The set includes three versatile shapes - a vase, bowl and pot (the second image shows which is which) - that you can group together to create a unique orchid display of your own, either freestanding or hanging with chain or twine.
Each design has a raised base to prevent roots sitting in water. A clear glaze inside seals the base and makes it watertight so you can safely use these on indoor surfaces. They can also be used outdoors or in conservatories and greenhouses.
The pots are hand thrown in Turkey using local clay and will develop an attractive patina as the salts slowly leach to the surface. They are fired to 1080°C to make them as frost resistant as possible, but if using outdoors we’d suggest moving them to a sheltered spot in the colder months.
Please note: any white specks in the terracotta are lime granules which occur naturally in raw Turkish clay. Occasionally when pots are fired the clay around them can split out a little, but this won’t compromise the pot’s strength. Lime helps bind the clay and ultimately makes for a stronger pot. As the pots are handthrown, the size is approximate.
