Coarse horticultural grit is especially useful for topping off pots of cacti, succulents and alpines. It gives them a neat gravelly finish, keeps low-growing leaves off damp compost and reduces soil splashes when you water. It’s also handy around the crowns of plants that don’t take kindly to sitting wet.

You can also mix it into compost to improve drainage and aeration, particularly for Mediterranean herbs and other plants that dislike wet roots. Washed and lime-free, it won’t raise the alkalinity of your mix so it’s suitable for a wide range of plants.
