Alpine slate is a lovely way to finish off pots of alpines, succulents and other small plants. The little slate chippings have a mix of grey and pinkish tones, giving them a natural, rocky look that works well with plants that like a more rugged setting.

Spread a thin layer over the compost to give pots a neat finish and keep soil from splashing onto leaves when watering. It’s also handy for adding detail to rock gardens and troughs, where the smaller pieces won’t overwhelm the planting.
