The combination of colourful evergreen foliage and pretty, pinkish white flowers in late spring and early summer, makes 'Flambeau' a handsome addition to borders or pots. Some people however will want to grow these shrubs just for their delicious berries, which start to ripen in autumn or winter. Wonderfully sweet and aromatic, they can be used in much the same ways as you would a blueberry - eaten straight off the bush if you can't resist, or used to make jams, pies or muffins.

  • Garden care: Plant in a sheltered border and provide protection from cold winds in winter. In April or May lightly cut back any shoots that spoil the symmetry of the plant, are dead or simply badly-placed. After pruning apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant.
