tomato (cherry) 'Red Alert'

cherry tomato or Solanum lycopersicum 'Red Alert'

Product Image
A super-reliable variety for growing outside in containers or the open ground as it starts setting fruit very early in the season, so even in less-than-perfect summers your toms have enough time to ripen.

Tomato 'Red Alert' is a bush variety, with a compact habit that doesn't need staking or pinching out, producing heavy trusses of large cherry tomatoes with a lovely sweet flavour.

How to care for tomato Red Alert:

Keep the soil consistently moist and begin weekly feeds with a high-potash fertiliser once flowers start to appear. This compact bush, cultivated variety does not require staking or side-shoot removal, making it easy to grow in pots, containers or beds. Towards the end of the season, moving container-grown plants to a warm, sunny, sheltered spot can help ripen remaining fruit.

Sowing instructions:

From February to May, sow 1cm deep in trays or two seeds per pot selecting the strongest seedling on germination. This takes one to two weeks and is best done at 64°F (18°C), ideally in a heated propagator, or covered with a clear plastic bag and placed on a warm windowsill. Use multi-purpose compost, to cover seeds.

Plant out in a greenhouse from March or outside once the risk of frost has passed.
