Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Gold Star'

tawhiwhi 'Gold Star'

Product Image
The leaves of this decorative evergreen shrub are a subtle blend of greens and gold, so from a distance, the foliage has a slightly luminous quality. On closer inspection, you can see the random mix of colours, which become less pronounced as the leaves start to mature fully.

A compact form, Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Gold Star' is great for screening (in a sheltered garden), but it will also make a handsome addition to mixed borders or larger pots. The small burgundy flowers it produces in late spring and early summer are very small, and while they might not be much to look at, they do have a rich, honey-like perfume.

How to care for Pittosporum tenuifolium Gold Star:

Plant in well-drained soil in a sheltered position with full sun or partial shade. Pittosporum thrives in neutral to slightly acidic soil and benefits from protection against cold winds and severe frosts, particularly in colder regions.

Water regularly during the first year to help establish strong roots, then reduce watering once settled, as mature plants are drought-tolerant. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth.

Requires minimal pruning—lightly trim in mid-spring to thin or shape if needed. Mulch annually with well-rotted compost or manure to retain moisture and improve soil quality. In colder areas, consider protecting young plants with fleece during harsh winters.
