Bringing colour just when many shrubs are winding down, Mahonia nitens 'Cabaret' puts on a long-lasting display from late summer through autumn. Its neat, upright habit is clothed in glossy, holly-like evergreen foliage, with fresh growth emerging in attractive reddish tones before maturing to deep green.

Striking clusters of bright orange-red buds line elegant flower spikes, gradually opening from the base upwards to reveal cheerful yellow blooms that are rich in nectar and popular with pollinators. As the flowers fade, decorative blue-grey berries develop, adding extra seasonal interest and providing a valuable food source for birds.

Compact and easy to grow, this RHS award-winning evergreen shrub is ideal for mixed borders, woodland-style planting and shaded corners, though it is equally happy in sun or partial shade. It thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and delivers reliable structure, colour and wildlife value throughout the year.

How to care for Mahonia nitens Cabaret (PBR):

Plant in a warm, sheltered spot in light shade or dappled sunlight, ideally protected from cold winds and frost. Grow in humus-rich, moist but well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Avoid waterlogged or very dry sites. When planting, dig in plenty of organic matter to enrich the soil and water regularly during the first year to help establish a deep root system.

Apply a 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted compost or leaf mould around the base in spring to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. After flowering, prune lightly to maintain shape, removing any damaged or leggy growth. In colder regions, protect young plants over winter with a mulch or fleece cover until well established.
