This shrub is semi-evergreen, so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new foliage appears again in spring.

  • Position: partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained, preferably acidic soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: February to April
  • Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)

This sophisticated, ‘ever-bronze’ Loropetalum combines striking foliage and white flowers reminiscent of its close witch hazel brethren. The compact ‘Ruby Snow’ is perfect for smaller gardens and containers and often benefits from a second flush of flowers in late summer and early autumn.

  • Garden care: Requires minimal pruning, but lightly trim after flowering to encourage bushy growth. Protect from frost damage with a double layer of horticultural fleece during sub-zero conditions and apply a thick layer of organic mulch in autumn to help insulate the roots.
