Leucanthemum vulgare

ox-eye daisy

Product Image
A variable, but nonetheless charming native species, Leucanthemum vulgare is ideal for quickly colonising areas of bare earth, and can often be found growing in bold swathes on grassy banks or roadside verges, where its daisy-like flowers will attract bees and other pollinating insects in late spring and early summer.

Ox-eye daisy is perfect for naturalising in a sunny wildflower meadow, and if deadheaded after the initial flowers have faded, it may go on to produce a second flush later in the season.

How to care for Leucanthemum vulgare:

These herbaceous perennials thrive in full sun and well-drained soil, though they will tolerate light shade.

They prefer fertile, moisture-retentive soil but dislike waterlogging, so improve drainage if necessary. When planting, space them well apart to allow good air circulation, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

Protect young plants from slugs and snails, especially in spring when new growth emerges.

Regular deadheading encourages prolonged flowering, and cutting stems back after the first flush may promote a second bloom. In autumn, cut plants down to the ground to keep them tidy and encourage fresh growth the following season.

Mature clumps can become congested over time, so divide them every few years in early spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Mulching in spring with compost or well-rotted manure will help retain moisture and improve soil fertility.

Sowing instructions:

Sow seeds indoors from February to May, lightly pressing them onto the surface of moist seed compost as they need light to germinate. Keep warm and evenly moist until seedlings emerge, then pot on when large enough to handle.

Alternatively, sow outdoors from April to June, or in late summer to early autumn, in a prepared seed bed. Harden off indoor-raised plants before planting out. Once established, Leucanthemum vulgare will readily naturalise, creating long-lasting drifts of cheerful daisy flowers.
