Quick to crop and easy to grow, this compact cucumber variety is a great choice for smaller veg patches, greenhouses and even large patio containers. The plants climb neatly to around 1.8m (6ft), producing a steady supply of smooth, glossy mini cucumbers with crisp flesh and a naturally sweet flavour, without the bitterness sometimes found in older types.

Cucumber ‘La Diva’ is an all-female cultivated variety, so every flower has the potential to develop into fruit without the need for pollination, helping deliver reliable harvests through summer. The slender fruits grow to around 15cm long, with tender skin and very few seeds, making them ideal for slicing straight into salads or picking fresh for lunch.

This versatile vegetable performs well trained up supports in a greenhouse, but it’s equally happy outdoors as a ridge cucumber where it copes well with cooler conditions and breezier spots.

How to care for Cucumber La Diva:

Grow cucumbers in a sunny, sheltered spot or in a greenhouse for the best results. Plant into rich, moisture-retentive soil or compost and keep well-watered, especially in dry weather. Train plants up a support to improve air circulation and keep fruits clean.

Feed regularly with a high-potash fertiliser once flowering starts. Harvest cucumbers when they reach the desired size – cut them off with a knife or snip rather than twisting. Picking regularly encourages more fruits to form.

Sowing instructions:

Sow three or four seeds into a 9cm (3.5in) pot of seed compost and keep warm in a propagator or on a sunny windowsill. Once seedlings have produced three true leaves, pot on individually.

Once all threat of frost has passed, harden off carefully and plant into the final growing site allowing 60cm (2ft) between plants. Protect young plants against slugs. It will help if you make small ridges of soil where you plan to grow your cucumbers and plant into the top to help water drain away from the stems and avoid rotting.
