Big, purple-mauve flowers with a beautiful silhouette appear from late winter on slender stems. These arise from the clumps of white-striped, green foliage, which provides a nice contrast and remains interesting after the flowers have faded. Useful for creating a blast of seasonal colour when little else is in bloom, they can be planted in pots, windowboxes or allowed to naturalise in the border or lawn. - Garden care: Plant bulbs in naturalistic drifts 10cm (4in) deep in September or October.
- Humans/Pets: Ornamental bulbs - not to be eaten
