A cheerful burst of golden-yellow flowers makes this compact perennial a brilliant choice for sunny borders. Fine, thread-like green foliage forms a neat, airy mound, topped from early summer onwards with masses of bright, starry daisy-like blooms on slender stems.

Coreopsis verticillata 'Zagreb' works particularly well towards the front of a border, woven through grasses or planted in generous groups for a stronger splash of colour. It thrives in a sunny, well-drained spot and, once established, is reliably hardy and easy to manage.

The flowers are popular with bees and other pollinators, while regular deadheading helps keep the display going for longer. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, it is a dependable choice for adding lasting summer colour without taking over the border.

How to care for Coreopsis verticillata Zagreb:

Pot tickseed up into containers with a good quality general-purpose compost, or into ground enriched with a backfill of compost or well-rotted manure, at the same depth it was growing previously.

Spread a thick 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf or garden compost around your newly planted perennial to protect the roots from frost, help to retain moisture around its roots and deter weeds from germinating.

Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and water well during hot, dry spells. Cut the faded flower-stems back down to ground level in autumn and compost.
