Clematis 'Christmas Surprise'

clematis (group 1)

Product Image
Clematis 'Christmas Surprise' is a winter-flowering clematis known for its creamy, bell-shaped flowers that bloom from early-to-late winter, typically December through to February, covering the festive period.

These blooms stand out beautifully against its lance-shaped, deep green foliage, adding subtle colour and fragrance to the garden in the darker months. 'Christmas Surprise', a compact clematis, thrives in sheltered gardens and is especially striking when scrambling through a well-established deciduous shrub or smothering a south-facing wall.

In spring and summer, it may shed some or all of its leaves, allowing neighbouring plants to take centre stage. Ideal for partial shade and well-drained soil, this group 1 clematis offers year-round interest with minimal maintenance.

How to care for Clematis Christmas Surprise:

To avoid dry conditions, and to ensure good soil contact around the rootball, we advise planting climbers at least 30cm (12in), and preferably 45-60cm (18-24in) away from the base of a wall or fence. An even larger distance should be maintained when planting climbers beside an existing tree or shrub.

Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these climbers in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of of pebbles.

No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds.

Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
