This popular brussels sprout regularly comes out top for flavour in supermarket taste panels, due to its mildly sweet taste - without that bitter or peppery flavour you often get.

'Brodie' F1 has a good holding ability that means you can harvest them over a couple of months, and a good resistance to leaf and button disease. It’s also a good source of vitamin A, B and C.

How to care for brussels sprout Brodie F1:

Firm the soil around plants to help develop strong root systems and prevent wind rock. Apply a nitrogen-rich feed in midsummer to boost growth. Stake taller varieties if grown in exposed sites. Remove any yellowing leaves to improve airflow and reduce disease risk.

Harvest from the bottom of the stem upwards when the sprouts are firm and about 2.5-4cm (1-1.5in) across, leaving the top rosette to develop if you want a final leafy harvest known as "sprout tops."

Sowing instructions:

Sow seeds in a greenhouse or coldframe in pots or seed trays of well-drained seed compost in spring. Pot on seedlings individually as they grow and acclimatise to cooler temperatures before planting outside in May, spacing plants 60cm (2ft) apart and firming in well. Keep well-watered, protect from slugs and net against pigeons.
