This pond plant dies right back in autumn, then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil type: reliably moist or boggy soil, or aquatic compost
  • Depth of water: 0-10cm
  • Rate of growth: slow to average
  • Flowering period: July to September
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

Originating in North America, this handsome marginal aquatic plant can also be grown in reliably boggy areas in the garden. Anemopsis (or apache beads) forms a clump of broad green leaves, and in summer produces relatively large white flowers, which occasionally have a flash of pink.

  • Garden care: Plant out in reliably moist soil, or pot up into a pond basket and place at the margins of a pond. Protect from cold, drying winds. A low maintenance plant, remove dead leaves and spent flowers as necessary. Divide congested clumps in early spring every few years.
