Gardenia jasminoides Celestial Star ('Ps-2013-4') (PBR)
garden gardenia
- Position: partial shade
- Soil: moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acid soil (or ericaceous compost for container-grown specimens)
- Flowering period: July to September
- Rate of growth: average
- Hardiness: frost hardy (may need winter protection)
When they appear throughout summer, the creamy coloured flowers of this new, compact gardenia will fill the surrounding air with their deliciously sweet perfume. Therefore, you should try to keep them close to a seating area, pathway, open door or window - and breath deeply each time you pass! Forming a low, bushy mound of lustrous, evergreen foliage, it's said to be hardier than most (it has survived short periods down to -10C), so it's a much better option for the British climate - particularly if you live in a milder region or have a sheltered garden. - Garden care: Keep it potted up, so if your garden receives hard frosts, it can easily be moved from a sunny patio in summer to an unheated conservatory or greenhouse in winter. Feed with a balanced liquid feed once a month and water freely with soft water during the growing season. Keep the compost reasonably dry throughout winter. Top-dress or pot on using ericaceous compost and lightly trim over-long shoots immediately after flowering has finished.
