This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full or partial shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: March to May
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

A wonderful, low-growing plant that can be used to add colour to the woodland floor, or the front of a shadier border. The long-lasting opalescent flowers open from pink buds in spring, and are shown off beautifully against the backdrop of silver-spotted, semi-evergreen foliage. This combination makes it ideal for subtly lighting up shady spots, where it can be planted with spring flowering bulbs, or shade-loving ferns and hostas. Also, as this is a compact variety, it will make a super addition to shady patio pots.

  • Garden care: Lift and divide large clumps every three to five years, either immediately after flowering or in autumn. Cut back plants affected by mildew to the ground and make sure they are well fed and watered - the plant will soon regenerate and produce new leaves later in the year.
