This compact dahlia collection brings together lively pink, peach, orange and yellow tones, with dark bronze and purple-flushed foliage providing a strong contrast. The open, simple flower forms give the planting a lighter, more informal character, while the varied colour combinations add plenty of interest without becoming visually complicated or conflicting.

Well suited to patio pots, containers and the front of sunny summer borders, these dahlias create a cheerful display from midsummer through to the first frosts. Their open flowers are particularly useful to pollinating insects, while regular cutting encourages a succession of blooms for the vase.

How to care for Pollinators Bright and Bold Dahlia collection:

We offer this Dahlia collection, where available, as tubers and ready potted plants.

Dahlia tubers can be planted outside after frost, or started off in pots under glass in late winter to early spring. Plant them horizontally approximately 12cm (5in) deep, making sure the ‘eyes’ are uppermost. Allow enough room between each tuber so the plants can grow and spread to their full size without being over-crowded.

Potted plants should be protected from frost in a well-lit location such as a frost-free greenhouse, cold porch, or cold-frame. Gradually acclimatise (harden-off) in mid-late spring before planting out into borders, protecting from late frosts with cloches or horticultural fleece.

While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Stake with canes or brushwood if it becomes necessary. In mild areas, leave them in situ over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch.

In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.

What's included:

Each collection contains the following bulbs:

  • 1 × Dahlia 'Pepita Pink': A tuberous-rooted perennial dahlia with mid-green foliage and single, deep pink star-shaped blooms centred with an inner ring of lighter pink modified stamens - studded by a button of bright yellow. Excellent for pollinating insects, cut-flower vases and borders, Dahlia ‘Pepita Pink’ makes an unusual and colourful companion for late season gardens. Grows to 30cm.

  • 1 × Dahlia 'Bishop of York': Cheerful yellow flowers, contrasting beautifully with the purple-flushed foliage, appear for several months from midsummer. Dahlia 'Bishop of York' is ideal for creating late colour in the garden, and the flowers will attract bees. They'll also last well after being cut. Grows to 90cm.

  • 1 × Dahlia Star Wars: A compact dahlia with bronze-flushed foliage and dazzling, yellow-centred, pinkish-orange blooms, which not only look colourful, but are ideal for encouraging bees and other pollinating insects into the garden. Dahlia Star Wars is particularly well-suited for pots and containers, providing lashings of colour over a long period from midsummer. The flowers will also last well if cut and added to a vase. Grows to 30cm.

  • 1 × Dahlia Dahlegria Tricolore: Bred for pots yet equally striking in garden beds, the petite stature and vivid blooms of Dahlia Dahlegria Tricolore provide eye-catching flair through the late season wherever grown. This award-winning tuberous rooted perennial has dramatic dark purple-flushed foliage, and from midsummer until the first frosts, abundant petite blooms 7cm (3in) across emerge, showcasing a tricolour blend of pink, peach, and bold red. Grows to 60cm.
