This perennial is semi-evergreen so it can lose some of its leaves in winter. In colder regions or more exposed gardens, it may lose them all, but then fresh new growth appears again in spring.

  • Position: full sun or lightly dappled shade
  • Soil: humus-rich, moist but freely draining soil
  • Rate of growth: average
  • Flowering period: May to June
  • Hardiness: fully hardy

This award-winning perennial forms a dense mound of dark green leaves, which in late spring and early summer, is smothered with masses of reddish pink, star-shaped flowers. A great little plant for the alpine bed or edging the front of a (mainly) sunny border, it can also be used on the terrace and planted in gaps between paving slabs.

  • Garden care: Give it a trim after the flowers have faded and lift and divide clumps in autumn.
