With violet-blue, fragrant flowers appearing in late spring, Lavandula × intermedia 'Phenomenal' is a compact, evergreen shrub with narrow grey-green leaves and uniform habit.

Noted for its larger than average flowers and strong stems, which don't tend to flop, cut it back after the first flush of flowers fade, and a second flush will be produced in late summer. Ideal for lining the edges of a path, offering a long season of interest to a patio pot, or filling gaps at the front of a sunny border.

How to care for Lavandula × intermedia Phenomenal ('Niko') (PBR):

Plant in a sunny, very well-drained spot with neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Cultivated varieties of Lavandula × intermedia grow larger and more vigorously than English lavenders, so allow extra space for airflow and spread. Once established it becomes more drought-tolerant and well suited to low-maintenance gardens and gravel planting.

Water deeply but sparingly, and avoid heavy or poorly drained ground, as winter wet is more of a risk than cold. In colder or wetter areas, improve drainage with grit or plant on a slight mound to keep the base dry rather than relying on thick organic mulches.

In early spring, usually April, lightly trim to remove damaged or dead growth. After flowering in mid to late summer (later than English lavender), cut back the faded flower stems and shape the plant, taking care not to cut into the older woody framework, as lavender does not regenerate well from old wood.
