This innovative seed mix lets you enjoy the beauty and benefits of wildflowers without losing the practicality of a lawn. It combines slow-growing grasses with UK native wildflowers that tolerate mowing, attracting pollinators like butterflies and bees while maintaining a neat, usable space.
The blend includes durable, drought-tolerant grasses such as strong creeping red fescue, chewings fescue, hard fescue, smooth stalk meadow grass, and crested dogstail. Native wildlowers comprise of birdsfoot trefoil, black medick, black knapweed, lady's bedstraw, meadow buttercup, oxeye daisy, self heal and yarrow. The mix comprises 96% grasses and 4% wildflowers. Some species also improve soil health by boosting nitrogen levels, and are ideal for new lawns or enhancing existing ones.
Whilst this mix does contain perennial wildflowers it's very much a practical lawn mix and we'd recommend opting for a specific wildflower only mix to achieve high density and impactful wildflower meadows. This mix offers versatile mowing heights, ideally ranging from 5-15cm, (2-6in) to suit your preferences for lawn usability and biodiversity.
Over time, these flowers will self-seed and increase their numbers to create a stunning natural lawn. To maximise the benefit of these flowers, we recommend raising the height of cut and/or cutting less frequently. This mix is drought tolerant once established and has some shade tolerance, and does not require feeding.
Consider supporting the 'No Mow May' campaign by Plantlife, which encourages gardeners to let their lawns grow throughout May. This helps support a wide range of wildlife, particularly pollinators like bees butterflies, and other insects. By skipping mowing for a month, wildflowers such as daisies, clover, and self-heal can bloom, providing an essential food source for pollinators emerging in spring.
To take part, simply stop mowing all or part of your lawn for May. If you prefer a tidier look, leave certain areas uncut while keeping pathways or edges trimmed. At the end of the month, you can choose to mow again or adopt a more wildlife-friendly mowing schedule, such as cutting less frequently or leaving sections to grow longer year-round.
Germination times: New shoots will typically appear within 7-14 days, but can take a little longer when the ground is colder. Ideal tempertaures are between 10°C and 18°C with weather conditions mild and frost free. We advise sowing from mid-March to May, and from late August to mid-October.
For best results, follow these step by step guides:
1. Prepare soil:
Remove weeds and any debris, dig soil to a depth of 15-25cm (6-10in) and rake level. Do not add fertiliser.
2. Sowing:
Shake the carton to mix the seed, using the built in applicator spread evenly at 20g/m². Alternatively, weight out the seed into 100g lots, broadcast by hand and sow 5m² at a time.
3. Mowing and Aftercare:
In good conditions, the first grasses may appear in 10 days, the rest of the grasses and wildflowers will establish in the following weeks and months. The native wildflowers flower between May and October but not usually at the same time. Spring sowings may see flowers later in the summer. Adjust the cutting height to your liking and enjoy more flowers in bloom as you let the lawn grow. For a fully natural lawn experience, you can allow it to reach an impressive height of up to 1m. Please remove cuttings as this will help the flowers to establish by reducing the fertility of the lawn.
