Astrantia major 'Gill Richardson Group'

masterwort

Product Image
This rich and dark form of astrantia with stunning crimson-plum pincushion flowers surrounded by a ruff of prominent red-tipped bracts appear from early to late summer. The leaves of Astrantia major 'Gill Richardson Group' are pretty too; lobed and dark green.

Upright in habit and clump-forming, masterworts are an old cottage garden favourite but work equally well in contemporary-style plantings. Use towards the front of a sunny, yet moist border and use optionally as an excellent cut flower for the vase.

How to care for Astrantia major Gill Richardson Group:

Incorporate plenty of organic matter when planting and water well in dry weather, especially newly established plants.

Lift and divide large clumps in early spring and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost around the plant. Divided specimens may take some time to establish since they don't like having their roots disturbed.

Astrantia thrive in consistently moist soils and perform best in cool, partially shaded summer conditions.
