Avant guard tulip collection

tulip collection

Product Image
Soft tones and sculptural forms define this elegant tulip trio, perfect for creating a calm and sophisticated spring display. The rose-like blooms of ‘Avant Garde’ sit beautifully alongside the fresh green-flushed petals of ‘Spring Green’ and the pure white, bowl-shaped flowers of ‘White Dream’. Together they offer a harmonious mix of texture and colour, ideal for borders, or cutting.

How to care for Avant guard tulip collection:

Using fresh, good-quality compost, plant bulbs in pots from September to November. For borders, we advise waiting until after the first frosts (typically mid-October to early December depending on your location) to reduce the risk of potential disease such as Tulip Fire.

Plant bulbs 15-20cm (6-8in) deep and 10-15cm (4-6in) apart in fertile, well-drained soil. Alternatively, allow 7-9 bulbs per 30cm sq or 60-75 bulbs per m². If you’re unable to plant your bulbs immediately, they can be stored in a cool environment with good air circulation. Remove all the packaging and place them in a loose-weave jute sack before labelling and hanging up in a dry, unheated garden shed or well-ventilated greenhouse.

In spring, when the plants are in active growth, apply a high-potash fertiliser (like Tomorite) each week until the leaves start to die back. Pinch off the spent flower heads as the petals fall, and let the stem and foliage die back naturally. The bulbs can then be lifted and discarded, or cleaned, dried and stored (as before) for replanting the following autumn.

What's included:

In this combination you will receive the following:

  • 7 × Tulipa 'Avant Garde': Boasting pale creamy-lemon flowers adorned with hints of yellow, ‘Avant Garde’ presents itself as a sumptuous double tulip, akin to a peony or rose in its appearance. With a delicate fragrance and early flowering period starting from April, this variety adds a touch of elegance to the spring garden. Its sturdy stems support the big, full blooms making it a sought-after choice for cut flower arrangements. Grows to 30cm.

  • 7 × Tulipa 'Spring Green': An elegant tulip with broad, white, slightly feathered petals, each with a bright green central band. Perfect for a sunny, well-drained border where it will brighten up a spring day or for planting in pots on the patio. Grows to 40cm.

  • 7 × Tulipa 'White Dream': Gorgeous pure white, bowl-shaped flowers appear in mid-spring above the strap-like foliage. Use it on its own, or with other white-flowering tulips to create a simple but very stylish effect. It is best grown in a sunny, well-drained site and is excellent for cutting. Grows to 50cm.
