Ashley's balcony dahlia collection

dahlia collection

Product Image
Bring long-lasting colour to your summer display with this compact dahlia trio. Each cultivated variety produces single blooms in striking shades of pink and orange, all carried on sturdy, mid-height plants that thrive in pots or front-of-border positions. Flowering freely from midsummer until the first frosts, these dahlias are also excellent for cutting, ensuring you can enjoy their vibrant colours indoors as well as in the garden.

How to care for Ashley's balcony dahlia collection:

Dahlia tubers can be planted outside after frost, or started off in pots under glass in late winter to early spring. Plant them horizontally approximately 12cm deep, making sure the ‘eyes’ are uppermost. Allow enough room between each tuber so the plants can grow and spread to their full size without being overcrowded.

While in growth, provide a high-nitrogen liquid feed each week in June, then a high-potash fertiliser each week from July to September. Stake with canes or brushwood if it becomes necessary. In mild areas, leave them in situ over winter, but protect the crown with a generous layer of dry mulch.

In colder areas, carefully lift and clean the tubers once the first frosts have blackened the foliage and allow them to dry naturally indoors. Then place the dry tubers in a shallow tray, just covered with slightly moist potting compost, sand or vermiculite and store in a frost-free place until planting out again.

What's included:

In each collection you will receive one tuber of each of the following:

  • Dahlia 'Pepita Pink': A tuberous-rooted perennial dahlia with mid-green foliage and single, deep pink star-shaped blooms centred with an inner ring of lighter pink modified stamens - studded by a button of bright yellow. Excellent for cut-flower vases and borders, ‘Pepita Pink’ makes an unusual and colourful companion for late season gardens. Grows to 30cm.

  • Dahlia 'Star Wars': A compact dahlia with bronze-flushed foliage and dazzling, yellow-centred, pinkish-orange blooms, which not only look colourful, but are ideal for encouraging bees and other pollinating insects into the garden. They are particularly well-suited for pots and containers, where they will provide lashings of colour over a long period from midsummer. The flowers will also last well if cut and added to a vase. Grows to 30cm.

  • Dahlia 'Pretty Woman': The pretty, single flowerheads consist of a row of sugar pink 'petals', which become a darker shade at their base. These surround a dark pink central disc, that turns golden-yellow as it ages. The flowerheads top upright stems and contrast beautifully with the bronze-flushed foliage. Its compact habit makes it perfect for pots and the flowers are also excellent for cut arrangements. Grows to 30cm.
