This frost-tender evergreen shrub captivates with its glossy, leathery, deep purple-red foliage that maintains its striking colour year-round. Growing to a compact 1.5m tall, ‘Pacific Night’ forms a dense habit ideal for sheltered gardens in milder regions. Thriving in warm, south or west-facing locations, this shrub requires protection from harsh winter winds and cold, wet conditions but could be grown in a suitably large pot to bring indoors to a conservatory or heated glasshouse during the winter. Small, inconspicuous greenish white flowers appear in late spring that may, in female plants, produce small, colourful berries.

  • Garden care:
In spring, lightly trim any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant. Afterwards apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted leaf mould or composted pine needles around the base of the plant.

    • Hardiness: borderline hardy (may need winter protection)
Thriving in acidic to neutral soils, this evergreen shrub captivates with its glossy, deep purple-red rounded leaves that retain their striking hue throughout the year, especially noticeable in the winter months. Exhibiting a compact growth habit, ‘Pacific Night’ transforms into a modestly sized shrub, perfect for basking in the warmth of sunny and sheltered gardens, or even thriving in a large pot if desired. Its iconic glossy foliage, characteristic of Coprosma species, makes for an elegant backdrop to brighter coloured foreground plants and flowers, with its deep purple tones creating a singular interest all of its own.

Afterwards apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted leaf mould or composted pine needles around the base of the plant. Protect from cold winter winds and avoid planting in cold, wet, exposed areas. In colder regions, protect from hard frosts, or keep it in a pot and move it to a sheltered spot when the temperatures dip.
