This climber is deciduous so it will lose all its leaves in autumn, then fresh new foliage appears again each spring.

  • Position: Full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: Moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil
  • Rate of growth: Fast
  • Flowering period: April to May
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy

A towering climber up to 8m (24ft) in height, Clematis 'Rubens Superba' boasts dark green foliage and a blossoming period in late spring and early summer. Its petite flowers, flaunting four delicate pale dusky-pink petals and prominent cream stamens, form an exquisite display. Distinguished as an improved selection of 'Rubens,' this variety offers slightly larger blooms exuding a robust vanilla scent and adorned with light pink flowers displaying a textured surface. This vigorous and early-flowering clematis is ideal for softening building outlines, covering fences, or adorning walls, and thrives in various settings, adding beauty whether climbing mature trees or embellishing north-facing sites.

  • Garden care:
Clematis need their roots to be kept cool and moist, so plant the base of these clematis in light shade or provide shading with other plants or a dressing of pebbles. No routine pruning is necessary. If the spread of the plant needs to be restricted prune immediately after flowering, cutting back overlong shoots to healthy buds. Apply a slow-release balanced fertiliser and a mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of the plant in early spring.
    • Humans: Skin allergen; Pets: Harmful if eaten
